Wood Type ‘KRAT’ (UR Type Collection)

Inspired by Historic Type

‘KRAT’ is a semi-gothic hybrid typeface that combines humanist and blackletter traditions. Its design takes inspiration from Rudolf Koch’s Wallau (1933), itself a reinterpretation of the 14th-century Italian Rotunda writing style, resulting in a distinctive typeface that balances historical character with contemporary clarity.

Designed for Letterpress

Ur Types is a family of typefaces created exclusively for wood type letterpress through a collaboration between East of Rome type foundry and TYPA Printing and Paper Art Centre.

Each letter, in every size, has been carefully designed to fit the traditional fixed-width Cicero unit system used in letterpress composition. While the typefaces can be explored through specimen sheet, the complete Ur Types family is available exclusively from TYPA as wood type in four sizes: 20, 16, 12, and 8 Cicero.
