Description
Grot is a heavy sans serif. Sans serifs (‘grotesques’, ‘gothic’…) types came into use in Europe in the late 18C in architectural drawing. These simplified letters were inspired by ancient Attic Greek inscriptions and were felt to have a timeless, pure and archaic quality ideal for stone carving. Part of the Ur Types, by East of Rome type foundry, a gothic family made solely for wood type letterpress in collaboration with TYPA Print Museum. Each letter, in each size, has been designed to fit into a fixed width Cicero unit system. Each type can be tested on the type sample pages here but for general use the Ur types are only available (in four sizes, 20, 16 12 and 8 Cicero) as wood type from TYPA.
