Description

Each of these notebooks is made from a repurposed hardcover book. The original cover is kept intact and spiral-bound, with new pages added inside. Because we work with whatever books come our way, every notebook is one of a kind. Our Artisan series are larger in format than most of our other notebooks, and more nicely finished. Artisan notebooks can be used as sketchbooks, guest books or for other purposes that do not need carrying around that much. We produce our notebooks from library discards that would otherwise end up in landfill.

Every month, large quantities of books are discarded by libraries, schools, and other organisations. Most hardcover books cannot be recycled and end up in landfill. Some find their way to our studio, where we give them a second life.

Where possible, we use industry leftover materials for the inside pages rather than recycled paper. This is preferable from an environmental standpoint: paper can only be downcycled, not recycled, meaning quality degrades with each cycle. Using leftover materials means fewer trees felled, fewer chemicals used, and more resources saved. The original text blocks from disassembled books go to a local paper factory for recycling, or become Cellu-fiber, a natural insulation material.

TYPA centre for letterpress and paper art is a private NGO. Selling our products is a way for us to support the other activities – maintaining the historic machinery, research into printing history, and educational programs for schools. Your purchases enable us to preserve a piece of common cultural history.
